July 4th/Independence Day Activities in and Around Orlando - 2011

It's that time of year again!  The heat, the beautiful foliage, the out-of-state tags...it can only mean one thing:  SUMMERTIME in Central Florida!

If you're looking for some fun festivities, activities or events in our area for this year's Fourth of July, you're in luck!  I've compiled a list of them here.  I hope that this helps you and your family decide where to spend your Independence Day.

Celebration Town Center July 4th Celebration:
Rubix CubeThis 80's themed event kicks off at 5pm, with fireworks at 9:30pm.  That's right, I said 80's THEMED!  Get out your spandex and bring a rubix cube.  Complete with a costume contest at 8:15pm, this event would be totally bodacious if only there was a rockin' 80's band there.  OH WAIT - A Flock of Seagulls performs at 8:30pm!  Pop your collar and head on out!

Downtown Orlando Fireworks at the Fountain:orlando fireworks at the fountain lake eola michael kara
This is an annual event for the beautiful city of Orlando, held at Lake Eola Park.  This event features an area just for kids and live entertainment.  Your family will have a blast!  The festivities start at 4pm, with fireworks at 9:30pm.

Winter Park July 4th Watermelon 5k Run:
eat that watermelon! If you're an early bird (or maybe you feel the need to burn some calories before a night of firework-induced indulgence?) you won't want to miss this Independence Day 5k through beautiful Winter Park.  It kicks off at 7:30am at Mead Garden.  The funds raised support the Track Shack Foundation.  Wondering why it's called the Watermelon 5k?  There's a watermelon eating contest at 8:30am.  Good luck with that!

City of Winter Park Olde Fashioned 4th of July Celebration:Old Fashion
In Downtown Winter Park's Central Park, the annual Olde Fashioned celebration goes from 9am (right after you've done a 5k and eaten your fill of watermelon) to 1pm.  This event features live patriotic music, horse-drawn wagon rides and much more!  Don't miss out on this one if you're interested in the Winter Park museums; the Winter Park Historical Museum will be free, and the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art will be presenting their Independence Day Open House.

If you're a Disney passholder and feel like fighting the crowds for a Disney-themed celebration, check out these events:

Disney's Celebrate America!  A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky - Disney's Magic Kingdom, starts at 9pm.
Rockin' 4th of July Celeration - Disney's Hollywood studios, featuring live rock, starts at 9:45pm.
IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth Featuring The Heartbeat of Freedom - Disney's Epcot, starts at 10pm.

You should be all set for some marvelous July 4th festivities now, right?  Did I miss anything?  What Independece Day celebration is YOUR family attending?
